Identify and discuss the various exit strategies that investors may Essay
Identify and discuss the various exit strategies that investors may use and the implications for commercialization - Essay Example In most of the cases, these kinds of investors would look for an investment opportunity for shorter terms like 3-7 years. The Angel investors are also another category who would want a high return from their investments but they might stick to their investments for longer periods of time. However, both of these categories would look for exit strategies that they may have in front of them. Initial Public Offering A company can go to the public to raise funds when it is big enough to guarantee its credibility and the people would be interested to buy the shares of the company through registered stock exchanges. This would enable the investors get their money back almost instantaneously as soon as the company collects the money. Most of the investors believe that the startups where they are investing in would have the capacity to go to public within 5 years of their inception. But this may not always be feasible because a company needs time to grow and sustain. Thus the venture capitali sts have to look for more practicable strategies. Acquisition The company can sell itself outright to a bigger company or individual who would have complete ownership and hence the venture capitalist would be able to get their investment back. The investor would also be able to negotiate the management contract in that case. However there is a possibility that the investor would lose his identity in the company. Management Buy Out In case of a buy out any one or two persons of the management may buy out the stakes of the company completely. In this case the persons who want to sell out the shares of the company would get his investment and return back and the other members would retain the shares of the company (Roberts, 39). The company has an advantage in a way that it can retain a part of the present set of management. Mergers The start-up can join hands with an existing company and can operate under a single name. In such a situation the investor would get some amount of cash an d also little amount of stake in the new company. However, the company would no longer be within the control as before. Sale of the Company In case the company is sold to some other entity completely the entire management will change but the investor would get full refund of his money and return at the moment of the purchase. Above mentioned ways are some of the options opened for an investor to exit after few years of initial investment in a company, though the final motives of the investor will drive him to the way that would be most appropriate for him. Implications for Commercialization The commercialization of a new product or idea needs the support of the investors both financially as well as in terms of managerial support. Venture capitalists have an active role in this regard. The commercialization requires a lot of investment in resources, marketing the initial launch, advertisement and the brand building. It exerts a greater amount of pressure on the investors as they woul d have to spend a lot on an investment that may not guarantee them sufficient return (Sahlman, 496). Thus it is important for the venture capitalists to weigh the alternatives and should look for ample scope for exit strategies that would allow them with the flexibility to move out of their

The Age of Oversharing Essay Example for Free
The Age of Oversharing Essay ââ¬Å"My battery in my phone is dyingâ⬠or ââ¬Å"Oh, he can tweet but canââ¬â¢t text back? â⬠is what floods Twitter userââ¬â¢s timeline on a daily basis. Meghan Daum refers to this as the Age of Oversharing in her essay ââ¬Å"I Donââ¬â¢t Give a Tweet What Youââ¬â¢re Doing,â⬠where she sarcastically dissects the controversies behind Twitter and how nearly fourteen million users have completely abandoned Twitterââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"initial function to serve as an information conduit between close friends and familyâ⬠(233). Along with her beliefs of Twitter adding to our already compromised interpersonal skills she carries the tone of being bitter and harsh throughout her essay as she evaluates the many answers to the question ââ¬Å"what are you doing? â⬠with a better question ââ¬Å"what the hell are we doing? â⬠Although Twitter serves to connect others instantly it ceases human interaction almost instantly as well. We live in a world where everything around us is done almost instantly and more conveniently. Prime examples, fast food restaurants, self-serve salad bars, fast thirty day weight lost results and JG Wentworthââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s my money and I need it now! We expect everything around us to move at a fast pace and that is exactly what is happening on Twitter, what you ate for breakfast, what article you read during lunch and your favorite show you watch every night before bed is now being shared with the world instantly with the click of a button. Daum refers to this as the Age of Oversharing, consecutive irrelevant post right after another which completely defeats the purpose of solely connecting with love ones not only because of geographical dispersions but also the reality of daily work and school commitments. Researchers at Harvard came up with studies that explain how Twitter has contributed to the Age of Oversharing and that is because nearly eighty percent of tweets on Twitter are of oneââ¬â¢s own immediate experiences. This is because ââ¬Å"researchers found that the act of disclosing information about oneself activates the same sensation of pleasure in the brain that we get from eating food, getting money or having sexâ⬠(Susan 2). That explains why every time I check my timeline someone either is willingly announcing that they are on the bus this morning for work or what kind of cereal that had this morning . I admit I am guilty of also tweeting about the day I just had or how I cannot wait for class to be over so I can watch Basketball Wives later that night on VH1. Our constant tweets reveal to our followers what we are truly about. Twitter can be obnoxious at times, constantly viewing irrelevant tweets from your followers on a daily basis. Daum takes the time to evaluate Twitter as if it were a person, stating that Twitter would be ââ¬Å"an emotionally unstable personâ⬠¦that person we avoid at partiesâ⬠(233). She goes further to add that Twitter will be the person we would view as mentally ill and will eventually feel sorry for. Her tone here towards Twitter is depicted as being fed up with users disclosed thoughts of oneââ¬â¢s self. Daum examines these tweets as unstable and this is apparent because if you take away the whole purpose and backbone of Twitter, it is just mostly users microblogging their every move and thought. Looking at the bigger picture this is when ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t give a tweet what youââ¬â¢re doingâ⬠becomes notable. It is true that we all have that one friend that constantly rambles about something either random or irrelevant. My friend Bobby is that friend that mirrors Daumââ¬â¢s reflection of Twitter as a person. For instance, Bobby is always looking for attention and if no one is giving it to her she splats out something pointless just like most Twitter users do. I would rather not answer her phone calls because she can go on about herself and drift off upon pointless conversations becoming ââ¬Å"the tragic oversharerâ⬠we would all like to avoid. Today since gestures like a wave hello or a polite smile are now being used more openly than before in emoticons through social networks, face to face interaction between people has now diminished. Daum asks the question of, are we tweeting because we truly want to communicate with a select group of true friends, or because typing has replaced talking? Being that free thoughts and videos are now instantly streaming to friends and family over Twitter, there leaves little room for story telling of a series of unfortunate events that can fit in a 140 character text box. It seems many prefer typing over talking, this can also explain the oversharing on social networks. Daum argues that we have misused Twitter for what it is really worth; instead of spoken words they are typed. I see this in my best friend Stephanieââ¬â¢s family where favors and questions for each other are preferred typed. Just last week I was over, Stephanieââ¬â¢s older brother sent her a tweet asking her ââ¬Å"where is the remote? â⬠Spoken communication becomes absent as connecting online becomes apparent more and more. Collectively, more ideas are being typed instead of spoken and excessive feelings are being squeezed into emoticons rather than expressed in person. In ââ¬Å"I Donââ¬â¢t Give a Tweet What Youââ¬â¢re Doingâ⬠Daum argues that this generation has entered the Age of Oversharing and has left the age of the telephone. Obnoxious and pointless tweets fed our egoââ¬â¢s.
Strategies for Family Communication
Strategies for Family Communication INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION Introduction A family is the important structure of any society and happy families can make a happy society. Every human being wants to live in a happy environment as a family is the place where people will find the achievement of their life time. Modern families often face multiple relationship issues which have begun contributed from the changed of lifestyle and poor relationships within the family members. Communication is the key to build a cheerful family. Talking with each other in the family and having frequently family gathering could help in keeping the relationship closer. Even between the couples, talking can release the tensions and promotes the affection closer. Never argue or shout at each other unnecessarily which can make the relationship worse. (ProKerala, 2014) Understanding the function of communication within the family will help us to avoid conflict and maintain good relationship. Certain conflicts could arise when family communication barriers are exists. Individual need of the family members cannot be reached all the time. This means that we have to make some compromises to fulfill the needs of others. Compromising does not mean that we have lost and the others in the family have won, but through this we can create a new solution to harmony. Be a good listener and acknowledging and respecting opinion of the other, could make a difference within the family members. Beth Lee, (2013) Family Tree Family communication My family is an average family in its size. Itââ¬â¢s is comprises with my parents, me, my wife and my two daughters. We can define ourselves as an extended family. Both my daughters are grown up now. During their childhood, they grow in the environment where their grandparents are there to teach them the way of life how it is supposed to be in the nature. They taught them the way of respecting elderly people in the family. My relationships with my daughters are just like a friend. They learn through the way how my relationship with my parents. My childrenââ¬â¢s always like to share things that happened in their school every day. This keeps our relationship even closer compare to any other family that I know off. When the parents are there to listen and understand their needs, the relationship with the children and parents will be greater. My parents passed away 18years ago and it is probably one of the hardest things that I have to tolerate. Keeping myself positive, I can always say that I will be forever thankful to him for giving me the happiest childhoodââ¬â¢s days that not many of them can get. My farther is my superhero, my light, and my role model. In my family, I have improvised the family communication compare to my old time. It is no longer parents and children relationship. We try to be their friends and share their problems with us. This is best way to keep them together and prevent them from getting wrong advice from their friends which can lead them to a wrong direction. Communication in the family is very important to determine how the relationship is going to be between the family members. Growing children requires more attention and proper guidance. We could manage the obstacles ahead by keeping calm and discuss with them on the problem and provide possible solution to solve them. Children nowadays would like make their own decision compare with like old days where parents decide for them. As a parent, we should be able to provide multiple solutions and help them on decision making which is good for them. We also should explain the consequences of making wrong decisions to them. The challenges that all parents may face is to make them convince on the suggestion that they give. The best way is to use live examples from similar cases which can relate to the situation. This only can be done when we can have proper communication link with them. Most of our children are facing many challenges in their schools. It may come from their friends, teaches or from their studies itself. They might not understand the subject they study or it is very challenging to them. We as parents should always keep an eye on them and communicate with them whenever we see their body language is changes. Help them to find other resources to help them to understand the problem that they are facing. It is again comes back to the communication factor. If we are not able to communicate with the children well, than we could not find out the problems and the solutions as well. A family communication process derived from the interactive relationship and interdependence among the family members. This is a hardest process and it has been practicing from the day one. In the family communication concept, there are several important things that we have to observe to establish a happy family. As quoted by Little John (1983), ââ¬Å"there is no such thing as an ideal family in this worldâ⬠. It is only a communication process in the family which determine the results of both happy and sad experience in their family. Communication happens when the family members are willing to interact and share their feeling with the family members. Normally a healthy family will attempt to maintain the closeness and handle any conflict in the family. Immaterial of being any form of a family, communication plays an important role in determining the quality of the life in this world. Ways to bridge generation gap among family members Generation gap between the family members is the major problem that is hard to digest. It is very difficult to compare with those people growing up in 1960ââ¬â¢s with the one in this latest generation. The cultures that the parents practiced during old days are no longer applicable and not practical for this generation. Our childrenââ¬â¢s clothes are too weird and their music is too loud and although they are speaking English, we simply cant understand a word what they speak. We might be on the wrong side of a generation gap. Cross the distance by remembering how much the children wanted to be understood by their parents when they were grown up. Normally it no a requirement to like or even understand whatââ¬â¢s happening surrounding but our children tastes it. Communicating regularly with our children is one of the best ways to bridge the generation gap, as coated by the ââ¬Å"American Psychological Associationâ⬠. Listening and talking are essential elements to build good relationship between parents and childrenââ¬â¢s. As parents, we have to show our children that their interests are ours although the age gap between us too far. When a kid is growing into a teenager, the communication might become difficult for the parents to understand. To keep the discussion open, parents must pay close attention to our childrenââ¬â¢s habits. If our child tends to be quiet around the house during the week due to long days stress with school, homework and extracurricular activities, do not push the issue. We have to make a note to them when the children are more open and feeling relax, like in the car, at the dinner table or on weekends. Make a point to them that we are always available to talk and discuss with no subject is off limits. When our childrenââ¬â¢s do come to us, we should not quickly agree with what they are saying instead we have to listen more than speak. Get to understand first what they are pointing out to make analyse before give comments. If we want to keep closer the gap between our children and us, we have to learn to speak their language that they speak. Keep up with the current trends that define our childrenââ¬â¢s generation from the slang they use, music, movies, the electronic tools and clothes to social networking and current events. Itââ¬â¢s very important that we become adept in todayââ¬â¢s technology, so we can monitor our childrenââ¬â¢s online presence and help them to make wise choices on the internet and beyond. Although we might feel like our critical years was not passed long time ago, itââ¬â¢s important to accept that times has been changed. It is not appropriate to compare our old time with current generation. We should not pressure our children to follow the old models of thinking and being it. Stop saying things like ââ¬Å"when I was your age,â⬠ââ¬Å"This is not the way how used to do itâ⬠or ââ¬Å"I just donââ¬â¢t understand these kids today.â⬠Itââ¬â¢s not a battle. It is about our family. The past was not proven to be better. It was just different. We have to accept the things as the way it is and try to understand the changes rather than comparing the current days to our passed years. Parents interested in bridging the generation gap required to be more opened and adjusted. The parents have to be flexible in their ideas and actions to keep up with their childrenââ¬â¢s immediate changes of current development. If we restrict ourselves ââ¬Å"This is who Iââ¬â¢m, and this is how Iââ¬â¢m going to beâ⬠then the gap between the parents and children will only expand as they grows older. We have to keep in mind that parenting is not an exact science. What worked with one child might not work with another one. We must be willing to adjust our parenting style to suit our childrenââ¬â¢s needs. (Oubria Tronshaw, 2014) Once parents understand what children are communicating through their behaviour, they can respond better. When the children feel respected and have their needs are met, reason for using challenging action to communicate is no longer required. Shouting or punishing a child for curtain behaviour may be able to restrict only for a particular moment, but it does not provide alternative ways for a child to act in difficult situations. When adults use punishment, which not allowed in current generation, they are sending wrong signal that anger is a good way to solve problems. When parents are able to help their children find an alternative way to communicate their needs, they will learn important of social and problem-solving skills that will help them throughout their life. (PBS Parents, 2013) Family Anecdotes Anecdote 1 During last December school break, the whole family of mine gone for a tour at Langkawi, Kedah. We had a nice tour during day time and late in the night we planned to go for a movie that just released on the cinema. Although we are tired, we just cannot reject my childrenââ¬â¢s request because that is the best way to understand our children and get them closer becoming their friend. In past days, the parents were totally reluctant to go for movies with their children fearing of coming across an embarrassing scene in front of the child, and now they are not just breaking that idea, but also going out to enjoy movies together. This explains that the recent movies, we go together with our family. ââ¬Å"The secret life of Walter Mittyâ⬠it is about to see the world, things dangerous to come, to see behind walls, draw closer to find each other and to feel. The story is about a day-dreamer escapes his anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with bravery, ro mance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker are threatened, he takes action in the real world start on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined. Whatever they are shown through these movies is part of the society, and tomorrow when our kids will grow up and goes to work; they might have to face all that, so why should we not take this as an opportunity to explain things to them. After this movie we had a chat together and discussing about the moral of the story that the day dreaming is only an imagination and will not help in shaping their real life. Our children were enjoyed the moment and they appreciate that we are able share exchange opinion and moments are brought our relationship even closer. It was a turning point for our children that we can never forget. Anecdote 2 There was a time during childhood; I together with my father and brothersââ¬â¢ used go for fishing at the lake nearby our house. A day before we have to prepare the bait needed for the fishing trip. We will dig out the worms from the soil to use as bait to catch the small fishes. The small fishes become bait for bigger fishes. My brothers will take me to the location by riding bicycles. Once we reach there, my brothers will explain the strategies for the fishing. Every one of us is thought of the sign language so we donââ¬â¢t make much noise which can scare the fishes off. We will than assigned at specific area and start our adventure. It is great joy when we together fish around the lake and catching a lot fishes to bring back home. The more fish we get, the more excitement we get to go forward. We will take a break to refresh ourselves and enjoy the food that we brought together. The feeling is like we are having a family camping at outdoor. It is very much different exciteme nt compare to what we are doing now that is routine work and study. Once it gets darker, we will bring back the catches to home and my sisters will clean them up and my mum cooks them for dinner. Everyone in the family will enjoy our mums fish curry cooking and the remaining fishes will be kept for the following days. It is not all about the fishing day out, but the enjoyment in our communication between brothers, sisters and parents for the whole day that we can never forget. These moments cannot be erased from our memory and we still questioning ourselves why this day cannot be the same as old days. Vision of ideal family Every family have their own ups and downs and has its share of arguments and regrets. But this does not mean our family should be at very smooth way of life. Itââ¬â¢s always a choice for how a family should be. In my opinion, an ideal family should able give self-respect one to others in the family. This is very important because every individual have their own interest and opinions. Miss understanding between husband and wife should be avoided at the first place. This is the main factor that most of the family have resulted to conflict and impact on their childrenââ¬â¢s. If this can be avoided, the next challenge is the growing childrenââ¬â¢s. I always would like be father who wanted to understand my wife and childrenââ¬â¢s problem and needs and fulfil their expectation as much I could within my capacity. The conflict always arises when the family members fail to communicate with each other and everyone has their own ego. I would like create an environment where my family members would like to come back home early wherever they go. For example, although my daughters are growing and extended their studies in university, I wish them to comes back home whenever they have their semester break. Iââ¬â¢m also intended if I could get the family together even my daughters are married. I wish to create an environment where the family members are always wanted to return home when they feels to do so. Iââ¬â¢m already started the footsteps that can be seen by my children to participate in any family gatherings whenever possible with my parent in lawââ¬â¢s which make them happy in their old age. I hope my childrenââ¬â¢s also can do the same in future when we are getting old and not left lonely anymore. 2790 Words References Beth Lee/LIVESTRONG.COM. (2013). What Is Family Communication?. Police Pursuits of Criminals Essay -- Criminal Crime Police Essays
Police Pursuits of Criminals à à à à à There has been a heated debate over the last few years whether police chases are worth the risk of public safety to catch a fleeing criminal. Each year these hot pursuits end in the arrest of thousands of criminals wanted for a wide array of crimes. At the same time it can cause injury and some times even death. à à à à à There is a huge misconception that police are out chasing the red-light violator or the burned-out tail light criminal. This is not the case at all. They are protecting the community and chasing serious felons. That is why most cops defend their right to engage in these high-risk pursuits. No police officer wants to try to stop somebody that they believe is good for a crime just to let him walk away. If the person that is being chased is wanted for a crime, not that he is guilty, but just wanted for an investigation, then the police have every right to stop them and to do what is necessary to apprehend them. à à à à à There is also another side to police pursuits with its own troubling statistics. We know that when a pursuit begins it usually ends up causing accidents, injuries, and can some times even be fatal. Critics claim that most of these pursuits are unjustified. Some people say that the suspects flee because they donââ¬â¢t have insurance or their license is revoked. They also say most of them are young and act on impulse and make a bad decision to run. Sometimes it ends up killing innocent people that are in the wrong place at the wrong time. à à à à à Is the tragic human cost worth the price for high-speed pursuits? On one side of the debate are the people who believe that pursuits should be severely restricted and abolished altogether. They say the police car seems to be the last unregulated weapon in law enforcementââ¬â¢s arsenal. On the other side are the ones sworn to uphold the law and consider pursuits a necessary law enforcement tool. If you go to a no-pursuit law, you are giving a blanket for the criminals to commit any crime they want and law enforcement is not going to be able to do anything about it. They will run every time because they know they will not be chased. If a person fleeing has a chance of hitting pedestrians, then you need to stop that vehicle at all costs. à à à à à As the fatalities mount, no one can run from these issues, least of all the cop behind the wheel. It is safe to say ... ...ce department. à à à à à The law enforcement community understands the public concerns for safety and has developed better ways to help pursue fleeing criminals in recent years. One of the best tools now is air support. Helicopters can safely patrol from the sky and there is little chance that the vehicle or criminal can get away. The only problem is that it is very expensive to run. Road spikes have also become popular by puncturing the tires and bringing the vehicle to a crawl. à à à à à There are many people with different opinions about hot pursuits. The public needs to back the police up on this matter so the criminals know we are not going to tolerate this conduct in our community and when they do they can expect to be caught and punished for their actions. If we allow them to get away with this behavior we are only adding to the chaos that is in our society today. As of now there are no better ways of catching a suspect. If people are concerned about the risks of high-speed pursuits, then they need to contact their public leaders and help with funding for better tools like the helicopter. Until this happens police chases will have to continue to be conducted from the ground.
Role of Women in Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit Essay -- Oranges Are N
Role of Women in Oranges Are Not The Only Fruità à In the novel Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, by Jeanette Winterson, most of the important, decision-making, characters are female. Jeanette, the female protagonist, is greatly influenced by her mother, a strong, overbearing, eccentric woman, and by Elsie, a prominent member of the family parish who becomes Jeanette's only friend and closest confidant. Elsie and Jeanette's mother act as polar forces in Jeanette's life, with the mother encouraging suppression of "unholy" or "unnatural" feelings and thoughts, and Elsie encouraging expression of feelings and accepting oneself for who one really is. Jeanette's mother, referred to by name only once in the novel, is probably the second most important character in the book, outdone only by the protagonist herself. She acts not as a role model, but as an example of what not to become, of a lifestyle to reject. Throughout the book, Mother encourages suppression of feelings she defines as unholy by way of personal example and by her attempted repression of Jeanette's homosexuality. An...

Healthy Lifestyles Essay
Health lifestyles, in turn, are ways of living that promote good health and longer life expectancy as stated in the assignment. Health lifestyles that promote good health and longer life expectancy would be one where the person has contact with doctors and takes care of themselves completely. While going to the doctors and taking care of oneself is extremely important so is taking care of ourselves outside of the health care system. We have to eat a proper diet and exercise. Most importantly the person has to be able to stick with it and drink water to make sure that they are hydrated and do not get sick from exercising. The person also needs to get adequate amounts of rest. I think that one theory that would support this point of view would be the theory of the ââ¬Å"Looking- Glass Selfâ⬠(Cockerham, 2012). Cooleyà ´s concept of the looking glass self-states that each person grows when they interact with other people (Cockerham, 2012). How we look at ourselves comes from how other people perceive us. Actually, how we see ourselves does not come from who we really are, but rather from how we believe others see us. The reason I say that is because most people see themselves how others see them. Or what they think others see them as. In my opinion that is what encourages people to start living and eating the right things. Exercising because of their self-image and what they think that others think about them. The second theory would have to be the theory of health lifestyles. I am unsure if this is an actual theory or not. Cockerhamââ¬â¢s theory basically states that individuals have the right to interpret their situation, as well as make choices. This is true, people do make their own decisions, however as he also pointed out that all social action takes place in contexts that imply both constraints and opportunities. By being able to choose to exercise, eat right and to see the doctor it is fully in that persons hand to live a healthy lifestyle. I would say reduce the amount of stress that you encounter especially if you know what causes you stress. Also exercise daily and eat healthy. The person should also get plenty of rest since sleeping too much or too little can worsen anyoneââ¬â¢s mood. It is alway s a good idea to pace yourself when you are exercising though. You do not want to end up hurting yourself if you push yourself too hard in the beginning when you are just starting to exercise. The more you exercise the more your body will get used to it and you can exercise more and boost your endurance and stay healthy. I think there are eight (8) components to the model. Theyà would be 1.) Class circumstances/ age/ gender/ race and or ethnicity collectives living conditions 2.) Socialization Experience 3.) Life Choices, 4.) Life Chances (both 3 and 4 interplay) 5.) Dispositions to Act 6.) Practices, 7.) Alochol use, smoking, diet, exercise, checkups, seatbelts etc. 8.) Health Lifestyles (reproduction). I think that it is very effective even today. It still applies. The demographics and life choices makes sense when trying to get someone to be healthy. They are still as valid and relate to present day situations as it did when the model in the study of health behavior and healthy lifestyle was first done. References Cockerham, W. (n.d.).
