Advantages and Disadvantages of Co – education Co – education exists when boys and girls learn together in one school. It first existed in Greece because of the belief of Plato, a Greek philosopher, that co – education helps in the development of the personality of both men and women when they are put together in the same school or class. It is prevalent in many countries because of its advantages, but for some, they do not want it because of its negative effects. In most countries, co – education is implemented because of its economic advantages. It is more economical and practical for a school to be exercising co – education than single-sex education because it lessens the number of teachers to be employed. In today’s generation, the†¦show more content†¦For adolescents, when boys become friends with girls, both sexes will be able to help each other in developing their attitude toward each other and also understand the similarities and the differences between them. This will help them to adjust themselves to be more open – minded to the opposite sex. With these advantages cited, there are some people who are against this system of education. First of all, they believe that co- education makes it difficult to cater the needs of each sex. For instance, some teachers find it easier to discuss some subject matters when their students have the same gender. Thus, staying in the same – gender school will better develop one person because he or she will be free to express his feelings and ideas when he has to express these in public with their same gender audience. Next, co-education may be damaging to the morality of a person especially in the case of middle school and high school students. When boys and girls are joined together, they develop mutual feelings with each other and enter to an early relationship. They are so much expressive with their feelings and become so much emotional that they may e ngage themselves in premarital sex resulting to unwanted pregnancy leading to countless abortion cases. This situation may result to having low grades and failing some of their subjects. With these facts, co – education is not helpful.
